Hi! We are Conall Cary, Gary Dempsey and Gerald Heffernan and we make up the MACHISMO team!
The Machismo Project was created as a means to address the lack of work being made about male identity in visual art today. Our goal is to put on an exhibition and symposium where guest speakers and the public can come together to discuss this issue in an open format. The main ambition of the project is not to try to provide answers but rather we hope to create an environment where people are encouraged to talk openly and express their opinions about what it means to be a man today.
The exhibition will be curated by Gerald and feature large scale works by Gary and Conall. Gary will be casting massive concrete slabs, building large sculptural forms and screen-printing onto the surface; while Conall is working on large scale industrial steel sheets etched, rusted and screen-printed.
There will be an exhibition, film screenings and panel discussions taking place in June at the TACTIC project space @ Sample-Studios in Cork City.
With this funding we will be able to travel the exhibition to venues in Galway, Limerick and Dublin which have already expressed interest in hosting the project. In each city local academics, artists and community workers will be invited to take part. The majority of the funding will go to the high cost of transporting and packaging the work, guest speaker fees and a high quality documentary film by Flying Knee Productions. The film will include the process of making the work along with interviews with the guest speakers and members of the audience, exploring a more personal approach to the issues involved.
If you think The MACHISMO Project is as important as we do, it needs your support to help it reach its full potential so that it can draw awareness to this important issue and impact as many people as possible.
So please check out our awesome rewards and get involved!
Our utmost appreciation and undying gratitude,
Gerald, Gary and Conall.
