By Katy West
We are producing a book charting the career of theatre designer Monica Frawley, and the costume drawings she has produced from her time at The Central School of Art and Design (1981) to The Red Shoes at the Gate Theatre (2017). Monica uses drawing and printmaking to produce detailed illustrations of the characters in plays, opera or dance shows, and her designs for their costumes.
A highly respected set and costume designer, Monica has designed the premiere productions for many celebrated Irish dramatists including Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Frank McGuinness and Marina Carr. Monica received the Judges Special Award at the Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2019 in acknowledgement of her work.
We need your help to finance a limited-edition hardback-book with drawings of costumes from By the Bog of Cats, At the Black Pig’s Dyke, Da, The Wolf and Peter, and many more productions that Monica has designed.
The funds we raise will contribute to the collation of all the drawings (1000€), the graphic design of the book (2000€), and the printing costs (5000€) to complete the project. :Fund:it also charge 8% commission for their support towards our fundraising. Any additional funds raised will support the launch of the book.
I'm Katy, Monica's niece, a designer and curator based in Glasgow. I am working closely with Monica to develop this book. I have previously worked with artists and designers in Scotland, Ireland and India, commissioning and curating projects relating to art, craft, and design. This is the first crowdfunded project I have worked on, and is very close to my heart!
We have everything ready to begin the project, lots of amazing drawings selected in a folio, supporting texts commissioned and drafted, a designer and printers ready to work with us. We will complete work on the project as soon as we raise the funds, to launch in March or April.
This is an independent not-for-profit project with myself, Katy West and Monica Frawley. We are keen to fundraise the costs of producing this book and hope we will be able to share it with you. Thank you so much for reading about the project.
Please share this page with people you know who may be intersted in our project... follow us on Facebook at Monica Frawley - Costume Drawings & Instagram @monica_frawley_costume
We really appreciate your support to the project, large or small, and hope you can enjoy the book, once we get all the work done!
