As you may know by now, I am Martin Sharry and I’ve got a show in the ABSOLUT Fringe.
The show is a one man show about me and two men. We all shared the same name and lived in the same house, on Inis Oirr, Aran Islands. The three generations of Martin Sharrys: my Grandfather, my Uncle and myself. The broken stories of each are assembled in this minimalist performance. I look back through the themes of migration, loss of language and the survival of imagination. A show-and-tell concerned with identity and boundary. The presentation is composed of photos, memories and found objects from the family home. It attempts to inhabit that place where the self ends and the world begins.
This project was partly developed at MAKE, an artist residency run by Cork Midsummer Festival, Dublin Fringe Festival, Project Arts Centre and Theatre Forum.
This compelling story of life on Inis Oirr is a contemporary Riders to the Sea. Spare, understated and utterly devastating – Róise.
