Who we are:
Drama Works Ireland; a multi-disciplinary theatre company working in schools, theatres and community settings was set up by Catherine Simon in the mid-noughties. A lot of our work in the past has involved offering workshops to schools, young people, adults and other professionals. We have worked with over 20,000 young people and directed over 35 productions with young people and adults.
We are now moving onto a new platform creating work for young people and adults instead of with young people and adults.
What we are doing:
Children of the Black Skirt by Angela Betzien is an awarding winning Australian writer. This play has been performed throughout Australia but never in Ireland.
We will be preforming the Irish Premiere of Children of the Black Skirt at Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, Galway this October 15th- 22nd before we bring it on the road to schools and venues throughout the country. Directed by Catherine Sheridan, onstage will be Michelle Simon and Noelle Kielty, joined by Catherine Sheridan.
Three lost children discover an abandoned orphanage in the bush. They become trapped in a timeless world haunted by the spirit of the past, and ruled by the black skirt, the cruel governess who floats and stalks the orphanage corridors with her enormous scissors. The spirits of the forgotten children will not rest until their stories are told. Stories of pock-picketing crimes of the eighteenth century, to the tragedies of the Stolen Generations of the twentieth century. Will they be able to tell the story of the weeping baby before then Black Skirt catches them?
A haunting Australian fairytale exploring the healing power of storytelling.
Children of the Black Skirt is an evocative play which explores history, reconciliation and the power of storytelling.
Think Roald Dahl meets Charles Dickens under the harsh Australian sun!
This is where you come in… What your help can help us achieve?
We are currently all working for free and our enthusiasm and passion for the play is getting us through. During the production 3 cast members take on the roles of 33 characters ranging in age, gender and era! This has been a bundle of fun and laughs in the rehearsal spaces we have been scavenging throughout the west of Ireland in the past few months.
We really believe in this play and we know you will too when you see it, it has a powerful way of pulling you in and getting into your skin.
All contributions will go directly towards the actual cost of putting on the play including performance rights, insurance, set, costumes, design and printing. Help us out and you will be forever imprinted in our hearts and the souls of all the characters you will get an opportunity to meet. Any contribution no matter the size will be hugely appreciated. Your pledge will make this happen and in return you will have good karma vibes heading your way as well as our eternal gratitude.
