Bankers by Brian McAvera

I have had a special relationship with the Focus Theatre for many years; having had one of my shows, 'Picasso’s Women', have its Irish premiere at the Focus Theatre venue. It went on to win the writer’s guild of Great Britain Award, so when the opportunity arose to write a play for their 50th anniversary season, I jumped at the chance. I wanted to write something of national relevance, so I decided to write a hard hitting play about the fallout from the banking crisis. I wanted to write about how the banks work and more importantly how all of us are affected by the irresponsible actions they have taken. The play takes the audience on a journey of kidnap and intrigue giving an engaging and fresh insight into this crisis. I have a brother who lives in London who told me unbelievable stories about bankers, so I knew I had to write this play to make people realise the extent of the deceit.

To bring this 50th anniversary show to life we urgently need your help. The importance of the Focus Theatre as the only art house theatre company in the country gives them immeasurable importance within the Irish theatre landscape. We would like to once again build on the success of the special relationship that we have had over the years, but we need your help to do it. The Focus Theatre is no longer funded by the Arts council and whilst they receive some money from Dublin City Council they are inherently a voluntary organisation. We will use the €1,500 towards venue rental and production costs such as set, lights, props and costumes.

About the show

What happens if you are a decent man, an ex- teacher, who has been destroyed by the banks? What would you do to change the system?
A well-known banker, a CEO, wakes up to find himself blindfolded and bound. His wife and his sixteen year old daughter are in the same position. Then the kidnapper enters: quiet, determined, organised. This is no spur-of-the-moment action. They are in a small disused theatre which he has soundproofed. And he has a plan….

The show is directed by Brian McAvera and the cast are Tara Breathnach, Michael Bates & Cathal Quinn.

Unlike the bankers, what would you do to change the system?

The New Theatre, 1st to 11th May 2013 @ 7.30pm, Previews 29th& 30th April
