Dr. Laurence Gill and Joanne Mac Mahon are researching solar water disinfection at the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin. Laurence has extensive experience in carrying out engineering projects in various countries across Africa and Joanne worked for a number of years as an engineer and aid worker in the Middle East. Both are committed to finding sustainable engineering solutions to water treatment problems in developing countries.

Hello Everyone!

So we finally reached the €22,000 target for our project in Kenya with a day to spare and we're absolutely delighted!

This is just a message to say a big thank you to everyone we pestered over the past few weeks about our project. Thank you so much for your time, efforts, advice and money, without which we would never have reached our target. We really appreciate all the fantastic support we received!

For all our funders based in Dublin, please join us this evening upstairs at Trinity Bar (formerly City Bar) on Dame Street from 5.15pm if you're free and have a drink to celebrate us reaching the target in time. For our funders outside of Dublin and Ireland, please congratulate yourselves today for having been part of this successful fundraiser!

Thanks again for all your amazing support and please send this message on to any of your friends or colleagues who you pestered for pledges over the past few weeks or who came to any of our fundraising events.

Extreme Water Challenge Success!

Hey Project Funders!

We've just finished up our Extreme Water Challenge at Trinity College. We had 13 teams carrying 5-20litres of water for 7km. Some fantastic costumes, amazing water carrying, a team in high heels and most importantly some amazing fundraising! On the day we collected €1496, with some sponsorship money still to come.

We're in the final push now to reach our target of €22,000, so now is the time to tell your friends (again!!) and let's hit the target by Wednesday!

Hello Everyone!

So we've come a very very long way over the past five weeks and are now most definitely within striking distance of our €22,000 target!

We had a fantastic Table Quiz night on Wednesday and made €1585 on the night which was amazing! Thanks to everyone who came along - 30 tables was an unbelievable turn-out!

Our final fundraising event is The Extreme Water Challenge which kicks off at 12pm from TCD cricket pitch on Monday 13 February. We'll be challenging teams to carry up to 20 litres of water for 7km (just like the women and children of Ndulyani). So it should be very interesting! Everyone is welcome to join in or just come along to watch!

Finally we would like to ask all our funders to help us give this project one final push towards the finish line. If you could find one person today or over the weekend and convince them to logon to our page and give €10 that would be fantastic!
And thank you again for the wonderful support you have given our project already.

We also want to say a very special thanks to the staff and students of Civil Engineering TCD and the staff and students of the Innovation Academy TCD-UCD, who have given us fantastic support and guidance over the past few weeks.

€7,000 pledged and 16 days to go!

Hi everyone,

Just letting you know that we've hit the €7,000 mark! 16 days to go now, so a lot of work to be done yet but with all the fantastic support we've been receiving we'll get there!

There are a few fundraising activities organised for the next couple of weeks, so will keep you posted on those. We have close to 90 funders now, so if each of you could possibly find 3 people to pledge €10 each, we would be very close to the €10,000 mark in no time at all.

We will be hosting a coffee morning at the Museum Building in Trinity College Dublin on Thursday 26 January at 11am. Everybody is welcome and there will be a prize for the best baked product, so all baking enthusiasts don't miss this opportunity to show off your skills!

We are also holding a Table Quiz on Wednesday 8 February at MacTurcaill's on Tara Street at 7.30pm. For more information contact Joanne at macmahoj@tcd.ie.

Detailed Cost Estimate of Borehole Project for Solar Water Disinfection Project, Ndulyani, Kenya

Transparency is crucial for all projects and even more so for those carried out in a development context. Project donors and beneficiaries need to know that money has been spent wisely and appropriately. We have detailed the cost estimate for our project below and if fundraising is successful, final project account details will be available on project completion, outlining all actual costs.

Cost Estimate of Borehole Project for Solar Water Disinfection Project, Ndulyani, Kenya:

Hydrogeological survey €2500
Drilling (2 days on site + mobilisation costs) €2 000
(based on assumption of 20 m depth borehole into the crystalline basement bedrock)
Hand pump (Afridev + delivery costs) €2 000
Submersible electric pump €1 000
Solar PV panels €700
Battery €400
Labour €2 000
Materials (including fence around pump) €1 250
Pipework to reactor (including concrete supports) €500
Reinstate filter behind dam €500
Flights (including one donor) €2 400

A crucial aspect of this type of project is to gain full cooperation from the local community and to participate with them for the duration of the project. Active community participation ensures project sustainability in the long term. We have already established excellent relations with the local community in Ndulyani and they are ready to embrace this project fully. A formal project agreement will be made with the community, as was done for the previous project, whereby the villagers will supply preliminary works (site clearance, supply of local materials and provision of non-skilled labour) and then take responsibility for the final operation and maintenance of the system, once the project is complete. The community Water Committee, which was established in 2008, met with us during our visit in July 2011 and the committee members are ready to take on their role and assist with project coordination. The positive experience of the original pilot project has shown us that this community is very motivated both in terms of project implementation, as well as the long term operation and maintenance of the system. We will provide all necessary training to the Water Committee members to ensure system maintenance and to reinforce the health benefits of the system with respect to preventing common water associated illnesses.
